Geothermal systems provide unique opportunities for studying life at high temperatures. With more than 10,000 thermal sites, Yellowstone National Park (YNP) represents the largest and most varied geothermal basin on the planet. Yellowstone's wide range in geochemical and environmental parameters creates an astounding number of niches that host a diverse array of prokaryotic and eukaryotic life, much of which has not been characterized. The YNP Research Coordination Network (RCN) was created to improve scientific research coordination and collaboration, provide information access and data sharing, increase outreach activities to multiple audiences, catalyze working groups, and stimulate progress towards systems biology of geothermal habitats.

The 2006 YNP RCN Workshop will bring together scientists and resource managers working in YNP to discuss current research projects, collect current data and information available on YNP geothermal systems, discuss database structures, web interfaces, and digital library content appropriate for YNP geothermal biology, and prioritize RCN programmatic activities including data access, student/staff exchange, RCN publications and special projects.
